Dave Rollins has been playing trombone since 4th grade starting under the direction of Lloyd Adams in Winters,
California. Moving from his home town of Winters to Sacramento during his 6th grade year, he became a member of the Sacramento Youth Band and remained
a member throughout his school years until his senior year at Luther Burbank High School when he became a member of the
Local 12, AFM (musicians union).
After graduating from Sacramento City College in 1969, Dave Rollins voluntarily joined
the U.S. Army Band program. After graduating First in His Class from the Army/Navy School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, he spent over a year at the
Presidio of San Francisco in the 6th Army Headquarters Band, and a year in the 76th Army Headquarters Band in Worms, Germany. He returned to Sacramento
to continue playing bass trombone and to attend Sacramento State College. Dave Rollins received his BME from Florida State, Tallahassee, Florida,
in 1976. He was hired as a Band Director for the Leon County Schools and taught Band at Amos P. Godby High School, and Belle Vue Middle School for
28 years, and retired in 2005.
While in Tallahassee, and along with teaching, Dave Rollins owned and operated his own
marine canvas business serving the north Florida Gulf Coast. He was an active parent in
the U.S. Pony Club, and the District Commisioner for the Ochlockonee River Pony Club. He
was a Rear Commodore and Cruise Captain for the Apalachi Bay Yacht Club. He was a
member of the Tallahassee Winds (Dr. Bentley Shellahamer, Florida State University), the
Big Bend Community Symphony (Dr. James Croft), and Tallahassee Community Band
(Gary Coates).
Dave Rollins returned to Sacramento with his wife of 32 years, Jennie (Brown), in
October, 2005, to live with his dad who was in the Sutter Hospice program. His daughter,
Brooks, is attending Florida State University(Go ‘Noles!), Tallahassee, Florida, and on full
scholarship.
Besides his career as a Band Director, Dave Rollins performed locally with many top name
recording artists such as Sergio Franki, Vicki
Carr, Mitsie Gaynor, The Temptations, The Supremes, Rowan and Martin, Jerry Van Dyke,
George Gobal, and many others. He was a member of the
California State Fair Orchestra and several other Cal Expo musical groups. He also was a
member of the Sacramento Camellia Symphony Orchestra.
Today, Dave Rollins is a member and President of the Sacramento Symphonic Winds, and
bass trombone for the Sierra Nevada Winds. He is again playing in Local 12, and working
as the Senior Sales Representative for California Canoe and Kayak, Ranch Cordova. Dave
and Jennie spend any spare time kayaking, skiing, and living a bi-coastal life style
between their homes in Sacramento and Tallahassee, Florida.
